Google Wallet Heading to Thousands of Independent Restaurants in the U.S.

ChowNow, the online ordering and marketing platform for restaurants, has announced a new partnership with Google that brings Google Wallet to thousands of independent restaurants across the United States. All of ChowNow’s restaurant clients’ ordering apps have been updated to include Google Wallet at no additional cost, and all new restaurant clients will receive it as a standard feature.

The addition of Google Wallet benefits both restaurants and their customers. Rather than manually entering their credit card number and billing address, customers with an Android phone can simply tap the “Buy with Google” button. This added convenience and the reduced ordering times should result in restaurants experiencing increased order volumes, hence a more profitable to-go business. With 70 million Android phones currently in use, the addition of Google Wallet has broad appeal.

Chris Webb, CEO of ChowNow, said in an official press release, “We continue to uphold our mission of helping independent restaurants compete with larger chains by providing them with technology that would be both difficult and cost-prohibitive for them to build themselves…In addition to increased convenience, Google Wallet also offers an extra layer of security to both consumers and restaurants,” says Webb. Google Wallet Fraud Protection covers verification of the unauthorized Google Wallet transactions in the U.S.

ChowNow’s online ordering and marketing platform makes it easy for restaurants to take orders from their websites, Facebook pages, or custom iOS and Android apps. ChowNow currently serves thousands of restaurants in the U.S. and Canada, and boasts a client list that includes distinguished chefs, regional chains, independent restaurants, and the U.S. military.

Recently, ChowNow raised $10 million in a Series B funding round. The company has raised $18 million so far. The firm’s investors  include Upfront Ventures, Steadfast Venture Capital, Daher Capital, and Karlin Ventures. ChowNow will use the funds to accelerate growth and launch new products, and the partnership with Google Wallet is certainly a step towards that. On the other hand, with this initiative, Google is leveraging the growing trend of m-commerce adoption in the retail space.
